October 28: Witch Potion Drink

Every year I try to feature at least one drinkable treat. I pretty much always think they’re delish-- like this smoothiethis water (don’t skip the cinnamon stick!), DEFINITELY this caramel appletini, and my personal favorite, this coconut chai pumpkin spice latte.

But for as much as I always seem to love them, my girls tend to be a hard sell on the drinks. They abandoned this tasty white hot chocolate drink halfway through the mug (don’t worry- I drank everyone’s portion. Haha!). My heart ached when they wouldn’t even try this heaven in a mug

But as I mentioned in this post (featuring 3 other beverage options!), although it took a while, I finally got wise to the fact that my best bet with fun fall beverages for kids is to take some ready-made liquid and add candy to it. (Case in point: this candy corn punch.) They slurp that stuff down! Especially because I don’t typically keep soda in the house. Thus, when I present them some, it most definitely feels like a treat.

I saw a picture on Pinterest showing the general idea of today's beverage, but when I clicked on the picture link, it took me to a website selling rugs. How annoying! I dug a little deeper just now so I could credit the original source and it looks like the idea came from A Girl and a Glue Gun. So here’s her post. (The rug site stole her photo and passed it off like their own as a type of phishing scam. Gross.)

Anyway, I used the general idea but modified it to go with candy I had available (I couldn’t find plain green Nerds anywhere, so I got the rainbow kind) and stuff my kids would eat (I ditched the Peeps and subbed in a lollipop witch finger, for instance.)

I found my gummy candy body parts and my witch finger lollipops at the Dollar Store. I do believe I’ve seen gummy eyeballs at the craft store, too. Just keep your own eyeballs peeled for them around this time of year. They’re out there.

This drink is easier than throwing in an eye of newt and toe of frog (though my version DOES have a toe in it!) so let me show you.

Witch Potion Drink
Yield: 1 drink

Ingredients:

8 oz Sprite (or any lemon-lime soda)
2 Tablespoons Nerds candy (I couldn’t find all green Nerds, so I used the rainbow kind and, conveniently, they ended up turning the soda a sickly green hue anyway, so they worked!)
Gummy candy body parts – toes, fingers, or eyeballs all work
Witch Finger lollipop

Directions:

Scoop 2 Tablespoons of Nerds into a clear cup or glass. (It’s gotta be clear because the joy of this drink is in how gross it looks.)

Pour cold soda over the Nerds.

Drop in gummy candy body part. (Because the Nerds will tint the drink, there’s a good chance you won’t even be able to see the gummy candy in there. All the better, because it makes it a fun discovery as someone sips it!)

Garnish with a witch finger lollipop and a Halloween-themed paper straw.

Serve it up and listen to the screams!
